American Oncology Network, LLC Pharmacy Fosters Critical Partnerships to Aid Breast Cancer Patients

New treatments providing more choices and better outcomes

Fort Myers, Fla., October 23, 2019 — While there is no cure for metastatic, or stage IV, breast cancer, the rapid release of new therapies means that many more patients are living longer and with better quality of life.

“Three or four years ago there were many fewer options for breast cancer treatment,” said Douglas Braun, CSP, PharmD, RPh, pharmacy manager for AON Pharmacy, the centralized specialty pharmacy operated by American Oncology Network, LLC.  “Now there are several new therapy alternatives that are improving patient outcomes,” he said.

Oral oncolytics, in particular, are largely replacing IV chemotherapy for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and that’s very good news for the estimated 271,270 Americans (268,600 women and 2,670 men) who will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. While traditional IV chemotherapy attacks the whole body, often causing nausea, hair loss and other side effects, oral therapies travel directly to targeted cells to block cell mutations and prevent the cancer from spreading.

Because these oral drugs are self-administered, a close partnership between patient, oncologist and pharmacist is critical to ensure compliance, help manage any side effects and monitor patient progress.

The AON team of pharmacists, technicians and support staff, based in Fort Myers, Fla., work around-the-clock to ensure quality and safety and effective treatment outcomes for the patients in AON’s growing network of community-based oncology practices across seven states.  With ready access to 99 percent of all available oral oncolytics, they can quickly dispense medications and supplies directly to patient homes.

However, their interactions with patients begin well before any pills are taken. “The first telephone conversation begins with education about the therapy, its proper use and potential side effects,” explains Braun.  “We then follow up every three weeks to schedule refills, monitor compliance and assess patient response.  Because we have access to the patient’s electronic health record, each pharmacist has a complete picture of the patient’s health and how therapies are being tolerated.”

Jeanna L. Knoble, MD, medical oncologist with Zangmeister Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, an AON partner, treats all cancer and blood disorders and has a special interest in breast malignancies.  “Our breast cancer patients rely on the regular touch-base with their pharmacist to have their questions regarding details of taking their oral therapy answered,” she said. “This partnership improves the level of care we provide by promoting patient adherence, helping monitor for toxicities and need for dose adjustments, and getting patients medication in an efficient, cost-effective manner. As the complexity and number of oral therapies increases, this type of partnership is crucial in oncology.”

Since the FDA approved the first class of targeted oral therapies for breast cancer treatment in 2015, pharmaceutical companies have steadily introduced new oral drugs, giving physicians and patients many more choices. “It’s becoming more like managing a chronic disease in many patients,” Braun says, “in some ways it could be compared to taking a pill for diabetes or high blood pressure, making changes to the prescribed therapy over time based on how well it controls the disease and how well it is tolerated.”

Dr. Knoble agrees and is optimistic about the ongoing focus in oncology research on targeted therapies. “Each patient’s cancer has a unique genetic profile for which certain mutations are seen as targets for future treatment options.  We continue to gain greater understanding about the progression of the disease,” she said. “The future is very promising.”

American Oncology Network Expands Pathology Laboratory

Centralized approach to diagnostics providing unique advantages to oncologists and cancer patients

Fort Myers, Fla., September 20, 2019 – Complete, accurate and timely pathology reports are critical to cancer diagnosis and treatment.  While cancer patients rarely, if ever, interact with the skilled physicians who evaluate their cells and tissues, pathologists are integral members of the cancer care team.  To serve its growing network of community-based oncology practices, American Oncology Network, LLC (AON) has doubled the size of its centralized Pathology Laboratory. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled this month at the newly constructed facility located in Fort Myers, Florida.

The AON Pathology Laboratory currently serves nearly 50 physicians in seven states with a testing menu that includes flow cytometry, histology and immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, FISH (florescence in-situ hybridization) and central lab services.  While the type of testing performed at the lab does not depart much from that provided by in-hospital or reference labs, AON’s centralized approach yields numerous advantages to oncologists and their patients.

PressReleaseHeadshot_Joint_Brad-Orman-Olson-Castine-2

“Our lab and our staff are seamlessly integrated into daily patient care and we maintain highly personal communication with the oncologists we serve,” said Dr. Ryan Olson, medical director of AON’s Pathology Laboratory.

“The advantage of having direct access to patient health information through AON’s state-of-the-art electronic medical records system cannot be overstated,” he added. “Because we can see a patient’s complete health history, we know exactly why the testing has been ordered and what questions the oncologist wants answered.”  When a pathologist discovers that additional testing of a specimen is necessary to obtain a more precise diagnosis, they are often able to make the appropriate request immediately, which increases turn-around time and minimizes unnecessary testing.

Despite the fact that the oncologists and pathologists are in different states, they are connected instantly via phone, email or text to discuss special testing requests, for in-depth review of a lab report or for general pathology questions.

The AON Pathology Laboratory has earned “Gold Standard” certification from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Through consistent use of Lean and Six Sigma tools to engineer process improvements and efficiencies, turnaround times are superior to industry norms. With wait times for test results minimized, patient anxiety can be greatly reduced.

“Since all of our testing is centralized and streamlined, we aim for 75 percent of flow cytometry to be signed out the day after it’s drawn and nearly 100 percent within two days of being drawn,” said Dr. Olson. “Nearly all tests are complete within one week or less, with only the exception of some outsourced molecular testing that can take longer.”

Dr. Michael Castine III, lead physician with Hematology/Oncology Clinic in Baton Rouge, LA, one of the first to join AON in September 2018, says his practice has seen enhanced results through the adoption of best practices and access to increased resources. “Through centralized ancillaries such as clinical lab and pathology, AON helps us take care of our business so we can focus on our patients.”

The Pathology Lab’s new location means there is room to grow. A Cytogenetics Lab Center was recently added.  Dr. Olson and his team of hematopathologists and surgical pathologists are actively exploring the possible expansion of molecular testing to include NGS (next generation sequencing) for both hematologic and surgical pathology specimens.  The team is also positioned to serve the additional five practices in four states that will join AON by the first of next year.

AON CEO Brad Prechtl, MBA says the ongoing investment in pathology services is well placed.  “Pathology is at the core of oncology practice and clinical research and we will continue to make investments to enhance the effectiveness of community-based oncology care.”

“Our world-class pathologists serve and support our partner physicians with specialized expertise that helps to inform and direct the very best care plan and clinical outcome for each patient we serve,” said AON Board Member & Chairman Dr. Stephen Orman

American Oncology Network, LLC In-House Specialty Pharmacy Supports Delivery of High-Quality Patient-Centered Cancer Care

Now in-network with four of the top five pharmacy benefit managers

Fort Myers, Fla., September 18, 2019 — The use of oral oncolytics, targeted therapies that are taken in an oral form for the treatment of cancer, has increased substantially in the past several years.  Oral anti-cancer medications currently comprise 25 percent to 35 percent of the oncology treatments provided to patients nationwide. To achieve optimal clinical outcomes, however, this ongoing shift from intravenous to oral therapy requires a close partnership among physicians, pharmacists and patients.

The American Oncology Network, LLC (AON) in-house specialty pharmacy works exclusively on behalf of nearly 50 physicians in its growing network of community-based oncology practices to ensure quality and safety and effective treatment outcomes for their patients. With its recent addition to Express-Scripts, the AON Pharmacy is now an in-network provider with four of the top five pharmacy benefits managers in the country.

The centralized state-of-the-art pharmacy, based in Fort Myers, Florida, has ready access to 99 percent of the available oral oncolytics, and can quickly dispense medications and supplies directly to patient homes.  Staff members coordinate insurance claims and even make connections to financial assistance programs. But those are just the beginning steps of this vital partnership.

“Due to the complex nature of many specialty therapies, frequent and direct interaction with patients is critical,” said AON Pharmacy Manager Douglas Braun, CSP, PharmD, RPh.  AON’s pharmacists interact with each patient to explain medications and proper usage, and are available 24/7 to address any concerns that arise.  “With real-time access to patient charts through our electronic medical records system, we’re able to stay in close contact with physicians to monitor therapies and to swiftly address any issues, ensuring that each patient’s treatment is as effective as possible,” he said.

Licensed in 46 states and the District of Columbia, the AON Pharmacy is poised to keep pace and provide centralized pharmacy management services to the five additional practices in four states that will join the AON alliance by the first of next year.

Genesis Cancer Center in Arkansas was among the first to join with AON in September 2018. “Our partnership has given us exposure to best practices in oncology care and we can clearly see the benefits,” said Dr. Stephen “Fred” Divers.  “The access we now have to centralized laboratory and pathology services, oral-oncolytic pharmacy and clinical trials research, for example, provides enormous benefits to patients that we could not have achieved on our own.”

“Working with AON we have gained access to enhanced oral oncolytic pharmacy services and other valuable offerings,” said Dr. Rangappa Rajendra, with Oncology/Hematology of Loudoun and Reston in Virginia. “This has brought additional benefits to my colleagues and me and, ultimately, to our patients.”

AON CEO Brad Prechtl, MBA said, “Managing pharmacy services can be cumbersome and time-consuming for individual practices. The AON Pharmacy maintains a direct connection with our physicians and clinicians so they can focus on taking care of their patients.”

AON Board Member & Chairman Dr. Stephen Orman said, “Because of their expertise and specialized training, our oncology pharmacists and nurses and technicians are uniquely qualified to enhance the patient care experience.”

Hematology/Oncology Clinic Hosts “Sneak-Peek” for New Location in Pennington Cancer Center

Baton Rouge, LA, August 30, 2019Hematology/Oncology Clinic (HOC) yesterday hosted a sneak-peek groundbreaking ceremony for its new location in the Pennington Cancer Center at the Bluebonnet Campus. HOC will relocate from its current location on Picardy Avenue in the spring of 2020.

The brand new, 17,000 square foot, $3.1 million facility will provide cancer patients in the Baton Rouge area with convenient access to physician services, chemotherapy and other advanced treatments, laboratory and specialty pharmacy services, and clinical trials, all under one roof.  The Clinic will have 20 private exam rooms and 37 chemotherapy infusion stations.

To enhance the patient experience and improve operational efficiencies for providers, Evidence-Based Design will be integrated into the facility.  Studies have shown that using certain colors, lighting and art in healthcare spaces helps to reduce stress, and patients are more likely to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Medical Oncologist Dr. Gerald Miletello spoke on behalf of the HOC physicians. “My colleagues and I have been a part of the Baton Rouge community for many years,” he said. “We live here and we are very proud to practice here.  We look forward to continuing to provide our patients with access to the highest quality of cancer care, so they can stay as close to home as possible.”

Honorary Guest and Philanthropist Paula Pennington de la Bretonne joined HOC physicians and staff, Baton Rouge Hospital administrators and local dignitaries at the event. When it opened in 1987, the Pennington Cancer Center was the first accredited cancer program in Baton Rouge. In 2006, the Center was named for the Pennington family with a donation from the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation which allowed Baton Rouge General to be the first in the country to purchase the ARTISTE linear accelerator, the most advanced treatment option at the time.

“After 30 years and nearly 30,000 patients, our Foundation is giving additional support to provide the Cancer Center with the latest technology and equipment in the fight against cancer,” said Ms. Pennington de la Bretonne. “We are grateful to support the growth of needed services in our community.”

Last year, HOC joined the American Oncology Network (AON), a multi-state alliance of physicians and veteran healthcare leaders working together to ensure the long-term success of community oncology.  AON CEO Brad Prechtl, MBA said, “We are proud to be part of HOC’s continued growth. Their rich history of providing cancer treatment of the highest quality and focused on the whole person, is truly inspiring.”

Cancer & Blood Specialists of Louisville Adds New PET/CT Scanner to Improve Cancer Treatment

Patients to benefit from new technology that enables physicians to more accurately diagnose and locate cancers

FORT MYERS, FLA., August 23, 2019 — Cancer & Blood Specialists of Louisville, a practice in the American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), is now offering patients a powerful new diagnostic imaging system known as PET/CT, or Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography. This technology combines the power of hybrid imaging in one exam to enable physicians to more accurately detect and pinpoint disease – helping to improve patient outcomes.

PET/CT scans are non-invasive and painless and take about 30 minutes to perform. In addition to providing state-of-the-art imaging data, PET/CT scans offer added comfort and convenience by reducing the number of diagnostic sessions a patient must undergo.

Jeff Esham, MBA, RT(R)(T), AON Vice President of Radiation Oncology and Radiology, explained, “PET/CT scans allow for the most accurate detection of the location, size and shape of tumors and lesions. With this technology, our physicians are able to see changes within the cancer in ways that had never before been possible.”

“The image quality with the PET/CT scanner is truly exceptional,” said Dr. Vijay Raghavan of Cancer & Blood Specialists of Louisville. “This technology allows us to expand our clinical capabilities and provide a more definitive treatment strategy to our patients.”

AON CEO Brad Prechtl, MBA, said, “The physicians and staff of Cancer & Blood Specialists of Louisville are committed to providing excellent care for their patients in Louisville and the surrounding areas. This technology allows them to continue to provide world-class cancer care in a community setting.”
