“Having the opportunity to share and present your research at the annual meeting is a proud accomplishment,” said Dr. Boccia, who also serves as AON Research Committee Chairman. “As physicians, we are on the front lines of patient care, and our research is an extension of that commitment. This platform highlights the alignment between medical inquiry and improved patient outcomes, emphasizing the imperative for physicians to actively contribute to the continuous advancements of medical knowledge. Let this moment energize us to persist in our pursuit of medical knowledge that contributes meaningfully to the well-being of those we serve.”

American Oncology Network’s Specialty Pharmacy Reports Zero Drug Waste After Value-Based Program, Secures Unchanged Reimbursement Rate for 2024

AON’s specialty pharmacy reports success in reducing drug waste like unnecessary and early prescription refills.

FORT MYERS, Fla., November 7, 2023American Oncology Network (AON) (Nasdaq: AONC) is excited to announce that its specialty pharmacy achieved a below-threshold result of 0.00% in drug waste during its participation in the value-based program Prime Therapeutics IntegratedRx-Oncology. As a result, the specialty pharmacy’s reimbursement rate will not change in 2024.

The program was conducted by Prime Therapeutics LLC/Magellan Rx Management (Prime/MRx). For a period of eight months, participating pharmacies were analyzed on medication adherence and discontinuation rate, dose change and drug waste differences. PrimeRx/MRx set the acceptable level at 2.99%.

“We are excited to share that our specialty pharmacy came in at 0.00% upon the completion of the program,” said Doug Braun, PharmD, RPh, CPh, CSP, AON’s senior pharmacy director. “This is below the 2.99% threshold that was set. Drug waste is an important topic in healthcare, and many systems and pharmacies work hard to avoid filling prescriptions before the necessary period. I am beyond proud of the pharmacy team for this accomplishment of reducing waste in the areas of unnecessary and early prescription refills.”

Unnecessary and early prescription refills are an industry-wide challenge. As a result, patients have an oversupply of medications, and payer and patient costs increase for the processing and delivery of medications. This becomes even more troubling if, for example, there are drug therapy changes where the current prescriptions no longer fit the recommended dosage amount, which prompts drug waste.

“The specialty pharmacy continuously practices our patient-first mindset, which is a core value we have at AON, and is dedicated to helping patients receive their medications with as little stress as possible,” said Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD, AON’s chief medical officer. “Learning that our drug waste was calculated at 0.00% illustrates the value this team brings to AON and our patients as well as how they are working to reduce overall healthcare costs by performing reassessments and interventions. Congratulations to the specialty pharmacy team on this achievement.”

American Oncology Network Launches New Cancer Foundation

American Oncology Cares Foundation and fund provide non-medical financial assistance to adult cancer patients.

FORT MYERS, Fla., November 2, 2023American Oncology Network (AON) (Nasdaq: AONC) announced today the launch of its cancer foundation, the American Oncology Cares Foundation. The Foundation will raise funds to provide essential non-medical financial assistance for adult cancer patients.

Cancer is one of the most expensive diseases to treat. According to a National Cancer Institute study, over 70% of cancer patient study participants reported some sort of financial hardship within the first 12 months of starting treatment. These hardships included at least one of the following situations: debt accumulation, money borrowing from family and/or friends, house selling or refinancing, and a decline in personal income.

“As cancer diagnoses increase, financial funds that are available to support patients decrease,” said Todd Schonherz, AON’s chief executive officer. “That is why we have created the American Oncology Cares Foundation — to provide another source of financial assistance to patients who are in need. Our goal is to alleviate some of the financial burden associated with essential living expenses so that patients can refocus on what really matters — their health journey.”

American Oncology Cares Foundation is utilizing non-profit America’s Charities to administer and manage the fund as well as to review patient applications and distribute patient grants. The fund is designed to be used for housing expenses; utility bills such as gas, water and electric; and transportation and food costs associated with travel to and from cancer treatments.

Patients must meet the criteria to qualify for financial assistance:

  • The patient must be receiving active cancer treatment.
  • The patient must be at least 18 years old.
  • The patient’s household income must be at or below 200% of the U.S. Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • Reside in a state where a participating AON practice is located.

Qualified patients can receive a grant of up to $750 per calendar year. Patients can complete the online application at charities.org/AONCares.

“Financial hardships related to cancer treatment take a strenuous toll on patients’ mental and physical well-being, hindering their overall healthcare journey,” said Carlos E. Arce-Lara, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist at Cancer & Blood Specialists of Arizona. “On behalf of the clinic, we are proud supporters of and contributors to the American Oncology Cares Foundation and fund. I look forward to seeing this fund grow and provide financial relief to many deserving patients.”

“While the fund currently operates solely in Arizona and Ohio, we are in the process of expanding this initiative with the hope that patients in all states in which AON operates will one day be able to benefit from the fund,” said Shelly Glenn, AON’s chief growth and relationship officer. “American Oncology Cares Foundation is a means where we can make a larger difference beyond providing high-quality cancer care in our clinics. Our patients are our core focus in all that we do, and I am excited to be a part of the Foundation’s launch.”

To begin an application, visit charities.org/AONCares. To donate to the fund, visit aoncology.com/AONCares

Messino Cancer Centers and American Oncology Network Celebrate Appointment of Local Physician to the NC Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control

Local medical oncologist Rachel E. Raab, MD, will serve on the committee for the next four years.

ASHEVILLE, N.C., October 12, 2023 Messino Cancer Centers and American Oncology Network (AON) (Nasdaq:AONC) are pleased to announce that Rachel E. Raab, MD, has been appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control, effective September 8.

Dr. Raab is a Board-certified medical oncologist at community oncology practice Messino Cancer Centers. She has experience treating patients with various cancer types but has a special interest and expertise in breast and gynecologic cancers.

She has been a practicing provider in the Asheville area since June 2015. She is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the North Carolina Medical Society. Dr. Raab received her medical degree from East Carolina University and then completed a hematology and oncology residency and fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center.

“I am honored and grateful to be appointed to this committee,” said Raab. “The committee is dedicated to improving cancer care in the state as well as access to high-quality care and services to improve the mortality rate. I have dedicated my career to patient care, ensuring my patients receive the care they need at the right time. I look forward to collaborating with other like-minded healthcare leaders who sit on the committee and to collectively advance cancer care in North Carolina.”

According to the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Care Coordination and Control website, their mission is to “facilitate the reduction of cancer incidence and mortality for all North Carolinians, enhance statewide access to quality treatment and support services, and maximize the quality of life for all North Carolina cancer survivors, patients, and their loved ones through educating and advising government officials, policy makers, public and private organizations, and the public.” Appointed members serve a four-year term, and the committee meets twice a year.

“We are excited to hear of Dr. Raab’s appointment to this prestigious and important committee,” said AON Chief Medical Officer Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD. “Improving cancer care as well as access to these critical treatments requires a collaborative approach of thoughtful healthcare leaders. This committee is designed to do just that, and we are excited that a physician in our network has been recognized to serve on it. Dr. Raab’s expertise and experience will provide value to the committee and community, and I look forward to her contributions over the next four years.”
